The Story Behind "Mahjong at the Local"

Every community has a beginning.

Ours began with a few women, a Mahjong table, and a weekly game that quickly became something much more.

After moving to The Local in downtown Boise, I was looking for ways to meet people and become part of the community. Around that same time, I met Julie through a local Facebook group. We both enjoyed American Mahjong, so we decided to get together for a game.

At first, we met in Julie's home. Then one week, while she was away on vacation, we played on the second floor at The Local Boise instead.

It turned out to be one of those happy accidents that changes everything.

The second floor gave us plenty of room for several Mahjong tables, comfortable gathering spaces, and room to welcome new players as our group grew. We never went back to playing in a home.

Because The Local Boise is a secure apartment community, everyone meets in the lobby before heading upstairs together. What started as a practical necessity quickly became one of our favorite traditions. Some players arrive early for a cup of coffee or kombucha, while others simply enjoy catching up with friends before the games begin. It's often during those conversations that we welcome new players, celebrate life's milestones, and share a few laughs before anyone even picks up a tile.

Somewhere along the way, Mahjong stopped being the only reason we came together.

Week after week, familiar faces returned, new friendships were formed, and beginners sat down beside experienced players. We celebrated first Mahjongs, cheered each other's successes, traveled to tournaments together, and watched our little group grow into a welcoming community.

Today, Mahjong at the Local is about much more than playing a game. It's about creating a place where people feel welcome, friendships grow naturally, and everyone has a seat at the table.

Looking back, it's hard to believe it all started with a simple idea to get together once a week and play Mahjong.

We're grateful it did.
